Chapter 6

Brody

Tentacles wrapped around my head, covering my mouth, before a scream could leave me.

Tentacles. Goldie had tentacles.

And too many eyes.

And razor-sharp teeth!

I screamed anyway behind the pressure of him silencing me, muffled and shock-still in terror.

“Please.” Goldie’s voice sounded different too. Echoey. It made my mind buzz, like the placement of extra eyes above and below his normal ones, and in other locations too.

It wasn’t natural. It wasn’t right.

What was he?

“I’m so sorry. I’m not going to hurt you, I swear. Please, Brody… please don’t fear me.”

Goldie started to loosen the tentacles holding my head. They were gold like his hair and eyes. There were so many of them, slithering from out of his sweater and sweatpants like spider legs made of snakes. There were so many of those eyes, too, and his teeth, fuck, his teeth looked like something from the depths of the ocean.

I wanted to scream again, but he was… he was letting me go. The tentacles around my head finished unwrapping, and the ones keeping me from falling were just there, gently steadying me. Goldie backed away, removing those tentacles too. As terrifying as he was, all his eyes looked sad, grief-stricken, like that first night when there had only been two of them.

The teeth and extra eyes started to fade like a mirage.

“Wait.” I stepped toward him, reaching out as if I might grab one of the tentacles to stop it from disappearing too. I didn’t quite do that, but I tried to not flinch either. “Don’t hide. Don’t lie to me. This is… the real you?”

The eyes resurfaced, and the teeth, with the tentacles rippling as if floating or underwater. “In a way. I did not used to have this human-like of an appearance, but this is the real me now.”

He’d been more inhuman before? “What… are you?”

“Ancient. From beyond this world.”

“Like space?”

“The Void, between the fabric of existence and an oblivion no human could comprehend.”

“Yeah. Okay. That sounds totally sane.”

“I’m so sorry, Brody, I…” Several tentacles reached for me like I’d almost reached for him but drew back with the same hesitation. They weren’t disgusting, just strange, surreal. He’d caught me with them. Tried to help me with them.

I reached again, and Goldie met my fingers, coiling the tip of a tentacle around my hand and wrist. It felt like skin but smoother. “Do you… have a real name?”

“Not one you could pronounce. I like Goldie.”

I laughed. Some Lovecraftian nightmare was wearing my sweater, and I was holding tentacles with it. How an angler fish’s smile could look sweet, I had no idea, but Goldie’s did. “How… what… I don’t even know where to begin with questions. And I know I said I didn’t need you to tell me anything, but this is sort of a different situation now.”

His sadness returned, but he didn’t withdraw. I was glad he didn’t. “I like your world. This dimension. Most of my kind don’t pay much attention to it, but I started watching. Little things at first.
